November is Lung Cancer
One in 15 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetimes. It is also the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with over 1.8 million new cases each year. Lung cancer can affect anyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or smoking history. The following factors can increase your risk of lung cancer: tobacco smoke, radon, asbestos and other carcinogens, air pollution, family or personal history of lung cancer, radiation therapy, diet, and age 65 or older.
Finding lung cancer early can save lives. Currently, only 16% of lung cancers are diagnosed while the tumor is still in its earliest stages of growth. Lung cancer may not cause any symptoms, especially in the early stages of disease. Therefore, it may first be detected on X-rays, CT scans, or other kinds of tests being done to check on another condition. However, some general physical symptoms are:
- Feeling unusually tired all the time
- Weight loss with no known cause and loss of appetite
- Trouble swallowing
- Swelling in the face and/or veins in the neck
